Apple is apparently gearing up to enter the dedicated smart home display segment on October 13 with the release of its long-rumored home hub, code-named J490.
Alongside the new display, the company is preparing refreshed versions of the HomePod mini and Apple TV set-top box. The entire lineup centers around a rebuilt Siri AI assistant powered by large language models designed to improve voice handling and local smart home control.
Smart Display Hardware and Form Factors
The primary smart display features a 6-inch square screen with rounded corners and a quarter-inch black bezel, sources tell Bloomberg. It lacks physical power or volume buttons and relies on a USB-C connection for constant power, as the hardware omits an internal battery.
Apple designed two physical configurations for the display. The countertop model sits on a round metal base through a polished metal arm, taking design cues from the classic iMac G4 base, while a second version, code-named J491, uses a flat base engineered for wall mounting.
The front housing includes a single FaceTime camera paired with microphones and speakers embedded directly inside the base. The camera system uses a virtual white ring light on the screen to illuminate users in dark environments for facial recognition.
Personalization and Siri AI Architecture
Multi-user identification to become a core operating feature of the smart display. The software uses voice and facial recognition to identify specific household members as they approach or speak to the device.
Once recognized, the screen automatically shifts to show personalized calendars, messages, notes, and custom app layouts. An onboard visitor mode hides personal accounts and private data when guests are detected.
The operating system merges visual elements from the Apple Watch, iPad, and Apple TV interfaces. Users can control connected smart home accessories, manage thermostats, check security locks, stream audio, and trigger multi-step automations. The device relies on Apple’s upgraded Siri AI assistant, which uses large language models to process complex web queries and manage connected household hardware more reliably.
Performance Refreshes for HomePod Mini and Apple TV
To support the increased processing demands of the new Siri AI models, Apple is also updating the HomePod mini and Apple TV. Both devices keep their existing industrial designs while receiving faster internal processors.
The refreshed HomePod mini will introduce new color options including green and pink, marking its first hardware update since debuting in 2020. The updated Apple TV serves as another dedicated home hub node to handle local smart home processing and Siri AI commands across the local network.
