Aqara has officially expanded its smart plug lineup with the release of the Power Plug H2 EU and Power Plug H2 UK. These new plugs build on the foundation of the brand’s popular power accessories, bringing dual-protocol support to users in Europe and the UK. Rather than forcing you to choose between smart home platforms, these plugs let you run either Matter over Thread or traditional Aqara Zigbee based on your current hub setup.

Dual Protocol Support Between Thread and Zigbee

The biggest advantage of the H2 series is its software flexibility. Out of the box, the plugs can operate on Thread, allowing them to connect directly to any Matter ecosystem through a compatible border router like an Apple HomePod, Google Home hub, or Home Assistant setup. This removes the requirement for an Aqara hub if you only need standard smart plug controls and cross-platform automations.

You can easily switch the firmware protocol between Thread and Zigbee using only a mobile phone via Bluetooth and the Aqara Home app. No hub is required for changing the firmware back and forth during setup.

While no hub is needed to perform the protocol switch itself, using the plug in Zigbee mode requires an Aqara hub to operate. Running on Zigbee unlocks extra software features inside the Aqara Home app, such as setting custom load limits and adjusting button behaviors. Both wireless modes allow the plug to act as a repeater, which helps expand the coverage of your surrounding Thread or Zigbee mesh network.

Energy Monitoring and Customizable Safety Features

Both the EU and UK versions handle heavy electrical loads safely. The EU plug supports up to 16A at 3680W, while the UK model handles up to 13A at 3250W. Both devices track real-time, daily, and monthly power consumption, letting you build automations based on wattage drops, like sending a notification when the washing machine finishes its cycle. An auto-cutoff feature also turns off the plug if connected devices draw under 3W for 30 minutes, which stops standby power drain.

Aqara also included practical physical controls on the plug itself. A built-in RGB indicator light shows device status and can even act as an independently controllable night light in Matter setups. For households with young kids, an app-enabled child lock disables the physical button so curious hands cannot turn connected appliances off by mistake. Overload and overheat protection round out the hardware, automatically shutting off power if temperatures reach 80°C or power limits are exceeded.

Practical Expansion for European and UK Homes

It is always great to see Aqara release hardware tailored specifically for regional outlet standards instead of relying on bulky universal adapters. By combining high load capacity with direct Matter over Thread support, the H2 series gives users a reliable, clean way to monitor power usage without locking themselves into a single smart home ecosystem.
